In real-world project scenarios, we typically choose the appropriate drone type based on performance criteria such as whether it needs to carry a payload or provide long flight endurance. However, when it comes to FPV drones, their portability and high-speed, high-resolution capabilities make it difficult to select the right FPV model.

In the field of FPV (first-person view) drones, the distinction between “folding" and “fixed" models typically refers to whether the airframe is “foldable" or “non-foldable."

How to Choose the Right FPV

Foldable : These are multi-rotor drones whose arms, propellers, and other structures can be folded and stowed away.
Non-foldable : These are multi-rotor drones with a unibody design that cannot be folded.
Portability
Foldable: Easily fits into a backpack or even a pocket when folded, ideal for travel, hiking, and other similar scenarios.
Non-foldable: Larger in size, usually requires a dedicated backpack or case, less flexible for movement.
Structural Strength and Stability
Foldable: Folding joints are a potential weak point; after long-term use, play may develop, affecting flight accuracy. Wind resistance is usually a weakness.
Non-foldable: A unibody design provides excellent rigidity, resulting in more stable flight attitude, better wind resistance, and more precise control feedback.
Flight Performance
Foldable: To balance range and weight, the power system often compromises, generally resulting in lower top speed and maneuverability compared to comparable fixed-wing aircraft.
Non-foldable: Can accommodate more powerful motors and batteries, pursuing higher speed, greater maneuverability, and longer range.
Weight and Regulations
Foldable: Easier to keep weight below 250 grams, exempt from some stringent registration and flight restrictions in many regions.
Non-foldable: Mostly exceed 250 grams, requiring adherence to more comprehensive flight regulations.
Maintenance Costs
Foldable: The folding structure is more complex, increasing potential points of failure and repair difficulty.
Non-foldable: Simpler structure, easier repair, and higher parts interchangeability.
How to choose: The usage scenario determines everything
Foldable FPV Drone
  • Backpackers or travelers: Portability is your primary requirement. You want the drone to be a non-burden on your journey, something you can take out anytime to record scenery.
  • Beginners or casual users: Want to easily get started, experience the joy of flying, don't require extreme performance, and value ease of use.
  • Need to fly without complicated procedures: Want to avoid complex drone registration and management processes as much as possible; models weighing less than 250 grams are a good choice.
Non-foldable FPV Drone
  • For missions requiring long endurance and heavy payload: Your tasks (such as surveying and inspection) require longer loiter times or carry more payload. A fixed structure can more efficiently accommodate large-capacity batteries and mission modules.
  • For operations in harsh environments: You need the drone to remain stable in challenging environments such as strong winds. The rigidity of a fixed fuselage ensures mission success.
